NORTHSTAR AUCTIONS No horses, OHVs allowed To the editor: We have recently discovered damage caused by horseback riders illegally using a segment of the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) located in southern Clearwater County. We would ask these individuals to please stop riding on the NCT. The trail is not built to withstand the impacts of horse use, especially when the soils are wet, nor is it built to horse trail standards as it is only cleared to 4' wide by 8' tall. Occasionally the trail also incurs damage from OHV use. OHV riding on the NCT is also illegal. Volunteers with the non-profit North Country Trail Association's Laurentian Lakes Chapter have spent many hours constructing and maintaining the NCT. It is unfair and discouraging for them to have to repair damage from illegal use. The NCT is the nation's longest hiking trail and extends 4,600 miles from New York to North Dakota. Administered by the National Park Service, the NCT is one of only 11 National Scenic Trails designated in the U.S. A twenty-mile stretch traverses southern Clearwater County within Itasca State Park, the White Earth State Forest, and on Clearwater County tax-forfeit lands. Volunteers worked with the National Park Service, Minnesota DNR, and Clearwater County Land & Forestry Department to locate and construct the NCT. We maintain and manage the NCT as a primitive footpath which offers a premier hiking experience. For more information on the NCT in this area, feel free to visit the Laurentian Lakes Chapter's website at www. northcountrytrail.org/llc. Horseback riders may legally ride on any forest road located on Clearwater County tax-forfeit lands and within the White Earth State Forest.
