Taxpayers had to work 231 days out of the year just to meet all costs imposed by government. Unfortunately, Minnesota taxpayers have had to wait even longer, until August 25, to "celebrate" their Cost of Government Day. Cost of Government Day is calculated every year by the Americans for Tax Reform Foundation and the Center for Fiscal Accountability. While other indices look primarily at taxation as a measure of the cost imposed by government, the annual Cost of Government Day Report takes into account the total spending burden as a percentage of GDP coupled with government regulations, an off-forgotten, but significantburden also borne by the economy. than the revised date of last year's COGD, which fell on August 11. Sadly, Minnesota's COGD still falls on an even later date." The fact that CODG falls on August 25 for Minnesota translates into North Star State taxpayers having to work 237 days out of the year to pay for their cost of government. The ongoing federal spending spree that certainly adds to any state's cost of government, and the strings attached to federal dollars sent to the states, may lead to even later Cost of Government Days in the future. "As it stands, North Star State taxpayers are already getting soaked, with only eight states marking COGD later than Minnesota this year," continued Norquist. "But at the rate government has been growing lately, we ain't seen nothing yet, unless spending restraint and serious reform become a true priority -- in Minnesota, and in Washington, D.C." About Americans for Tax Reform (ATR): ATR opposes mis taxpayers strgk4o pay al! tax increases as a matter of for their mortgages 'and their gas principle and believes in a sys and grocery bills this yearO6t,,,,in which taxes are simpler, flatter, of Government Day serves as a grim reminder that much of their struggle is a direct result of a government that has grown too big and eats up too much of their hard earned money," said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform. "This year, the national Cost of Government Day arrived a full eight days later more visible, and lower than they are today. The government's power to control one's life derives from its power to tax. We believe that power should be minimized. ATR was founded in 1985 by Grover Norquist at the request of President Reagan. The ATR website clearly labels the group as being "center-right" on the political spectrum. The flagship project of Americans for Tax Reform is the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, a written promise by legislators and candidates for office thai commits them to oppose any effort to increase income taxes on individuals and businesses. Additionally, ATR works with state-based center-right groups to help replicate ATR's national "Wednelay Meeting" in the states. Currently, there are over 50 meetings in 45 states. These meetings bring together a broad cross section of the center-right community-taxpayer groups, social conservative groups, business groups, legislators, etc., to promote ideals of limited government. Americans for Tax Reform created the Center for Fiscal Accountability (CFA)in 2008. CFA focuses on all central issues related to fiscal responsibility and accountability, especially spending restraint and the promotion of a more transparent and accountable government on the local, state, and federal level through easily searchable online spending and contract databases. Americans for Tax Reform and Americans for Tax Reform Foundation also sponsor the annual calculation of Cost of Government Day, the day on which Americans stop working to pay the costs o1 taxation, deficit spending, and regulations by federal and state governments.
